How / when did you know that you were an artist? I have just always danced. I don't think it was something I ever decided, it's just something I have always done, whether dancing around in my living room, bedroom or studio I was able to make sense of what was going on around me.
How would you describe your work? Instinctive. Working with extremes, ideas, emotion or movement that explore grey in-between areas. Sensual, raw, grounded movement that is tangible using highly physical partnering, that is restless and questioning. I'm interested in exploring a real sense of communication between performers that is honest, where the audience can feel the work instinctively as much as they see and think about it. By creating work from authentic human experience, the dancers can communicate as real people on stage. I like to collaborate, bringing together dancers and other artists creating a melting pot of ideas and work that speaks through the movement and work itself.
What would you like people to take away from your work? I'm interested in asking questions through work, but not necessarily answer them, leaving the audience to interpret what they see, allowing them to take from the work images, emotions and relationships between dancers that they can connect to and are affected by in some way.
Who inspires you and why? I am very much inspired by my time living and dancing in mainland Europe for four years, where the boundaries between dance and theatre blur to just being about creating a performance and communication. Everyday people and situations that I may see on the street or in a cafe, I just like people watching and observing the relationships between people. It is inspiring to work with different bodies and physiques, drawing upon the diverse and unique abilities of each performer.
If you could sit with any artist, past or present, who would it be? And what would you ask? I would love to have been able to sit down and have a coffee and cigarette with Pina Bausch and Frida Kahlo - both very influential females in their own worlds.
What do you feel your greatest accomplishments are? I don't know if they are accomplishments but I see myself as an extremely lucky performer to have been in the right place at the right time to have worked with a number of great companies, choreographers and dancers who I have learned so much from that really influence what I'm doing now with Underground 7 - exploring and creating work and working with interesting diverse performers.
Finally, if you weren't an artist, what would you be? I would have loved to have been a scientist, studying human science or anthropology. I'm a bit obsessed about human behaviour, evolution, instinctive behaviour and the thin line between science and religion. Always questioning: why? My dad always reminds me that I was one of those annoying kids who always asked 'but why is it like that'? I was always fascinated by trying to understand, not looking for answers but trying to connect the dots.
