Name of group/ artist:
Lost Dog / Ben Duke
What is your project?
It is the creation of a new show called 'Salvage'. The show has been commissioned and produced by the Newbury Corn Exchange. The show looks at the idea of salvaging situations - ranging from the attempts to salvage a relationship to the salvaging operations that take place after huge natural disasters. It is a show about the aftermath and how people exist in the moments and days following an irrevocable event.
Who will this appeal to and why?
The show will appeal to a wide audience of both dance and theatre goers. The narrative makes the work very accessible and allows us to take dance to a theatre going audience. It is work that aims to drawe on the best of both dance and theatre and will attract people who have an interest in watching innovative work from either or both of these art forms.
How would you describe your work?
Our work sits somewhere between dance and theatre. This piece will combine movement, text and live music. It will be funny, dark and physical.
How would you like people to respond?
I want to move people, and for them to be engaged and entertained. I want to create work that stays with people long after the show has finished. I do not set out to tell the audience something or to deliver a message but want the work to remind people or show them that live performance has the potential to touch you in a very profound way.
Who inspires you and why?
The work of Alain Platel was the single most important thing in making me want to dance. I saw a work he made on a youth dance company called Bernatedje and was amazed by his ability to create a world in which people could express themselves with words and movement and the transitions between the two were fluid fluid and convincing. And although it is something of a cliche I would also say Pina Bausch. I find it amazing that her work seems so fragmented and yet so unifeied. It seems to me to be held together purely by the depth of her imagination. I find that inspiring.
What do you feel are your greatest accomplishments?
The work I am proudest of to date is a piece we made in 2007 called 'Hungry Ghosts' - although it is my no means my ideal piece it comes closest to achieving the goal of combining text and movement so that the end result is stronger then either a play or a pure dance piece. I hope 'Salvage' will be even better.
