Name of group/ artist: Matthew Hellett- Junk TV and Carousel.
Name of project: Mrs Sparkle.
Tell us about your project? I'm making a film based on myself and my alter-ego, Mrs Sparkle. The idea I have is that I have different dance moves – I feel curious and find myself on a live stage with an audience that really loves me. People who see the film will leave feeling happy and uplifted. It's a feel good movie about difference and acceptance. I am working with my colleagues from High Spin, and I'm looking forward to working with their energy and excitement.
Who does it involve? I will be working together with Simon Wilkinson from Junk TV to make a dance on 16mm. Its the first time I've used this kind of film. It means I'll have a big crew of people working with me. I'm really excited about this. I think that I will learn a lot from making this film.
Who is it for? The finished film is for everyone who wants to watch it at film festivals and events. It is also for the learning disabled community – showing everyone our potential and what we can achieve through the creative arts.
What do you hope to achieve? The finished film will be the most amazing thing that South East Dance has ever seen. It will be a soft, graceful, strong and magical film that celebrates an alternative life in a positive light. Mrs Sparkle is the most glamorous drag queen this side of London. This film will show her softer side – different to the side that people see at the Blue Camel Club – prepare to shed a tear or two.
How would you like people to respond? The film audience will join in with the exhilaration that Matthew feels through being Mrs Sparkle.
