South East Dance is delighted to share a documentary film, which celebrates the end of the Lone Dances Commission Two. The project saw the creation of a series of solo dances, performed by non-professional male dancers, made by professional choreographer, Jane Mason.
Jane Mason is a choreographer and performer. She has been making work for live performance since 1997 and more recently for film. She trained in Dramatic Arts at Bretton Hall before dancing for Random Dance Company between 93-97.
After a difficult selection process, the three young men who worked with Jane were Callum Johnston, aged 17, from Crawley, George Bowers aged 18, from Haywards Heath and Daniel Webb, aged 20, from Cooksbridge, near Lewes.
Callum said: “If I hadn’t have done this project I would probably just be at home on the sofa watching telly.. Nothing important”
Daniel said: “everything just seemed to fall together really… and it turned out I wasn’t as bad a mover as I thought I was”
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity enabled them to produce and perform movement that was totally individual to them and to explore the form of 'the solo' with a professional, experienced chorographer.
George said: “doing it (Lone Dances) you kind of find out more about yourself.. You find something you never thought would do… I definitely want to go down the performing route”.
South East Dance believes community dance has the potential to be challenging, exciting, engaging, and beautiful. Everything you’d expect from work created for and performed by professional artists. To achieve this vision we gave Lone Dances the same creative resources – time, space, and professional choreography.
For South East Dance this has been a great project to be able to philosophically test out some of the ideas around community dance and around professional work and what that really means.
This programme of activity sits firmly within South East Dance's loyalty and commitment to accessibility.
Supported by Arts Council England, South East. South East Dance is an Equal Opportunities employer.
