Music composer, Frederic Monnoye, creates the haunting and experimental accompaniment to Maya Deren’s silent film, At Land, being screened as part of the Dance for Camera Festival 2007. Monnoye is also a digital artist so knows what does and doesn’t work when fusing sound and visuals, At Land being no exception.
‘I like to use abstract sound but create a journey through music. This was very achievable when composing the accompaniment for At Land as the narrative is so strong,’ Monnoye explained. ‘Deren’s work is full of symbols and imagery and is very inspiring.’
Brussels born Frederic came together with fellow Brusselian, Johanna Bramli, to create this cacophony of sounds, layering voices and instruments. Prior to the performance, both Frederic and Johanna will be performing with the Brusselian Music Collective Elphémérrances in Belgium, where they intend to record some of the improvisations, which will provide the basis for their composition.
At Land will be screened as part of the Maya Deren Retrospective on Saturday
1 December, 2.30pm at the Lighthouse Digital Lounge. £5.00/ £4.00 conc.

BILLY COWIE’S IN THE FLESH
South East Dance is delighted to present the UK premiere of Billy Cowie’s 3D installation, In the Flesh, as part of our Dance for Camera 2007 festival.
This unique magical installation took 12 months to create and has already been seen by hundreds of people internationally. To experience In the Flesh the viewer must first put on 3D glasses, take position on top of a wooden box and then watch the space directly in front of them. As the whir of the projector starts up, a life-size performer appears before the viewer on a zebra print rug. Dancer, Sara Popowa moves fluidly before your eyes with subtle stretches and movements. Popowa is an experienced Butoh dancer, and the discipline and control exercised in this Japanese artform is reflected in her movements. Haunting music, composed by Cowie provides the backdrop, as the viewer is taken on a captivating, almost voyeuristic journey.
