Community & Learning - Young people at risk

Dansync

Young people dancing against graffiti background (c) Dark Daze

Dansync was a three year dynamic initiative, targeted at young people ‘at risk’. Using dance, video, music and technology to create new opportunities for hundreds of participants and leaders, this unique project included:

  • Dance activities in partnership with music or video artists to engage young people
  • ‘Dance, the arts and social inclusion’ - a training course accredited by the University of Middlesex for dance or arts practitioners and youth  workers
  • Mentoring, professional development placements and support for people working with ‘at risk’ young people
  • Rigorous research by sociologists from Goldsmiths College using an innovative video methodology to measure the real-life impact of dance activity on young people

We have learnt so much from the Dansync programme, both positive and negative and have been convinced of the benefits of dance as a tool for working with hard-to-reach young people. In order to share our research we have made the Introduction and four research reports available to download here:

Dansync was supported from creation to evaluation by the Dance Partners South East consortium and South East Dance. We gratefully acknowledge funding from Arts Council England, Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Paul Hamlyn Foundation, Positive Activities for Young People and Portsmouth City Council.  A ‘spin off’ on project using the Dansync model was managed by Hampshire Dance and supported by Creative Partnerships Southampton and Isle of Wight.

If you have found this research interesting and would like to spread the word through a conference, article or other means we can offer a number of resources:

  • Deliver a talk, presentation or case study at an event
  • Contribute an article to a publication, journal or newsletter
  • Arrange training for your staff/artists
  • Provide a detailed model to roll out this project nationally
