Debating Dance

South East Dance is changing the face of the Artists Update events in Brighton. As a pilot scheme in the south east, artists, practitioners or anyone who loves dance will curate the quarterly events; deciding the format and content. We will call these forums Debating Dance.

With one event per quarter in the south east region, Debating Dance will have a different host. If you have an idea or topic for discussion or would like to come and host an evening please get in touch.

"We talk to artists, practitioners, teachers, producers in fact everybody working in dance constantly about what they are doing and what support they need. These conversations constantly feed into the work we develop. This is an opportunity to have those conversations and debates and for us to hear from the sector about what they think about our past work and to talk through our future planned work.” Mairead Turner, former Chief Executive.

Following the success of the first Debating Dance in September we are really excited to be able to take our second debate to Oxford on 22 January 2009 from 6- 9pm at the Oxford Playhouse.  Our host Cecilia Macfarlane will focus on the issues provoked by intergenerational dance; describing her practice as a dance artist before opening up the debate to discuss how the stereotypes attached to dance can hinder the use of the art form in this field.

Cecilia trained as a teacher at the Royal Academy of Dance and as a dancer at the London School of Contemporary Dance. She is an Oxford-based independent dance artist with a national reputation for her work in the community.  She is the founding director of Oxford Youth Dance, DugOut Adult Community Dance and Crossover Intergenerational Dance Company and co-founding director of Oxford Youth Dance Company.

Cecilia was a Senior Lecturer in Arts in the Community at Coventry University for nine years. Her work is based on her passionate belief that dance is for everyone; she celebrates the uniqueness and individuality of each dancer.  As a performer Cecilia is continually curious about expression, how movement can communicate so powerfully to others without the need for words. Her work is very influenced by her studies with Joan Skinner, Helen Poynor, Deborah Hay and most recently Anna Halprin.
