Dance Leadership Awards

Would you like to... teach dance?

This Easter volunteers from East Sussex spent a week of their holiday learning new skills on the Brighton Dance Leadership Course. All the participants had a fantastic time. Sarah Hamlett who took part in the course said “The Dance Leadership experience was a great opportunity to focus on teaching skills and was led by an inspiring and experienced tutor.”

The Dance Leadership Awards is accredited by University of Surrey. This is a nationally recognised qualification that teaches leadership skills such as organisation, planning, communication and teamwork through the medium of dance. It is a fun and practical qualification with no entrance requirements or final examinations to sit. Who is the Dance Leadership Awards aimed at?

You must be aged 16-25 and some dance experience would be useful. However what’s more important than your dance experience is an enthusiasm for teaching, sharing your skills and working with the community. We are particularly interested in applications from those of you who don’t currently have many opportunities to access dance. The course is free to attend, but you must be able to commit to attending on every day of the course. Applicants must come from one of the nine regions that the moving Voices project covers, which are: Brighton and Hove, West Sussex, East Sussex, Hampshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey and Kent.

From the course you will gain the following skills and knowledge:

How to plan and prepare for the delivery of dance classes or workshops
Basic communication skills for leading a dance activity
Principles of health, fitness and safe dance practice
Understanding the relationship of music to dance
Understanding of the scope of opportunities in dance both locally and for further study
Creating, developing and assisting with the performance of a simple dance piece
Leadership skills in dance.

The course is delivered by South East Dance as part of moving Voices, a volunteering in dance project for young people, run by young people.
