What dance is happening in other regions? England has a network of ten National Dance Agencies. Each has a different regional remit, and you can find out more about each by visiting their websites:
For West Midlands: www.danceexchange.org For London: www.theplace.org.uk For the South West: www.dancesouthwest.org.uk For the North East: www.dancecity.co.uk For Yorkshire visit: www.yorkshiredance.org.uk For Swindon: www.swindondance.org.uk For the East of England: www.danceeast.org.uk For the East Midlands: www.dance4.co.uk For North West England visit: www.dancenorthwest.org.uk
I'm not really sure what I want to know - I just want to find out about dance in general Try surfing the internet for information. Some good websites to start with are:
Youth Dance England www.yde.org.uk Arts Council England www.artscouncil.org.uk Dance UK www.danceuk.org Londondance www.londondance.com Article19 www.article19.co.uk
Can you tell me where I can hire a dance studio? We do not have the resources to list all available studios here and keep them fully updated. However we can offer some tips for searching for a suitable space.
In the first instance try contacting your local authority arts officer or theatre to see what spaces they know of - some may even have a directory. Otherwise try ‘googling’ dance studio and the area you want to rehearse in e.g. 'dance studio Medway'.
Where can I go for funding for my dance project? Again it’s good to talk to your local authority in the first instance, they may have an Arts Development Officer or Dance Development Officer. Depending whether your project is to create a touring dance production, or to deliver an education project there are different funds available:
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation
I am a professional dancer – where can I get professional development and training? Foundation for Community Dance
There are notices on www.londondance.com with news and opportunities for workshops and training. Subscription to The Place Artists Development includes Juice magazine, which has a wealth of information on training and professional development.
I am a choreographer – how can I find dancers based in the South East? We can place a call for dancers on our News and Opportunities page. Please email a brief advert (stating what type of dancers, the nature of the project/performance, fee available and details of how to apply) to anna.jefferson@southeastdance.org.uk.
COMMUNITY AND LEARNING
I want to book someone to teach a dance class for me – who would you suggest? It depends what kind of class you want! South East Dance works with a number of different dance practitioners and we can suggest some individuals but we cannot make recommendations as the right teacher will be different for each context. We strongly suggest that you seek references for any teachers you book to teach dance as well as asking for a CRB check (www.disclosures.co.uk) or carrying one out yourself. You should always give the teacher a clear brief for the class and ensure you have a signed contract.
Try asking teachers in local schools who may have booked dance workshops previously or your local authority arts officer. If they are not able to help contact kyla.lucking@southeastdance.org.uk for further suggestions.
We are currently developing a method of linking freelance dance practitioners with those who want to book them. Details about this project will be made available here when the project is underway in 2007.
Where can I train to teach dance?
To teach GCSE or A level Dance in secondary schools or sixth forms you will need a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) – for higher education institutes that offer this try ‘googling’ pgce dance.
Where can I train to be a professional dancer? There are several universities and higher education institutes in the South East, some offer dance courses and classes and performances in their studio theatres.
