South East Dance is delighted to announce that the three Screen Dance Artists Fellows 2009 are Lucy Cash, David Hinton and Margaret Williams.

About the artists:

Lucy Cash began her career as a filmmaker and artist in 2000. Originally trained in movement and performance, much of her work has been informed by a choreographic approach.  Individual works considering choreography in many different forms - including 'found' choreography and exploring different kinds of presence and performance. Her diverse background supports her interest in a range of different contexts: as well as single screen moving image works, projects have included live performance and film/video projects for gallery exhibition and also online exhibition and site specific spaces. Her work has been screened in over ten different countries and on BBC2, BBC4 and Channel Four. He has made film versions of two stage shows by DV8  - DEAD DREAMS OF MONOCHROME MEN and STRANGE FISH - and he has collaborated with several choreographers to make original dance works for TV including Matthew Bourne, Wendy Houstoun, Russell Maliphant and Rosemary Lee. His documentaries have twice won BAFTA awards and his dance films have won many awards including the Prix Italia and the IMZ Award. He also set up an MA course in Screen Dance at London Contemporary Dance School and taught the course for its first year.

Margaret Williams has made award winning music drama, dance and documentary films for television. She’s worked with choreographers such as David Bintley, Siobhan Davies, Jiri Kylian, Wayne McGregor and Cathy Marston. VETERANS is her most recent collaboration, with choreographer Victoria Marks.

DANCE4FILM, directed by Margaret, is a 90 minute special for Channel Four, celebrating the best of dance on film, combining existing dance films from around the world with new commissions. Presented by Jonzi D and completed in early 2008, DANCE4FILM was shown on Channel Four on 27 December 2008.

About the fellowships:

During 2009 all three artists will be undertaking a personal professional development programme specifically designed to support their individual artistic needs.

The Screen Dance Artist Fellowship Scheme, supported by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, is a new initiative based on South East Dance’s 11 years of experience in delivering training to screen dance artists. We have learnt that artists benefit highly from more sustained periods of development and packages of support tailored to the particular needs of the individual artist.

This scheme is specifically targeted towards mid-career and established artists, who wish to focus on research and development that would benefit their future career in screen dance.  All three artists where chosen for their desire to be inspired and to learn new skills, giving them an opportunity to access professional development aimed at a high level.
