Lone Dances is a two-year programme to commission a series of dances that explore the form of the solo, to be created by a professional choreographer and performed by a non-trained performer.
Often at community dance platforms we are used to a stage crowded with eager performers. South East Dance wants to experiment with our approach to creative community dance by stripping the process down to a one-to-one relationship between choreographer and performer.
Still Life with Fiona was premiered at the South East Dance 10th Anniversary party on Thursday 6 March 2008. The dance was performed three times and Fiona received rapturous applause from audience members. A memory wall outside the performance space gave the audience the opportunity to write comments and feedback on the performance. One spectator wrote: ‘A beautiful dance made for a beautiful performer. A fantastic achievement! Well done.’
Fiona’s previous experience of performing was very minimal prior to the Lone Dances project, so to perform a solo on stage was a real achievement. All South East Dance staff involved in the project have seen a huge development in both Fiona’s personal confidence and physical ability.
An audience member commented: ‘The Lone Dance project is a shining example of great community dance. The final performance was a real credit to Fiona and Ginny and a real joy to behold. Breath taking.’
