11 Million Takeover Day

Three students in discussion (c) Mike Massingham

They came, they saw, they conquered!

As part of the Government initiative, 11 Million Takeover Day, Friday 7th November 2008 saw children and young people take over offices and workplaces all across the UK. South East Dance opened its doors and was thrilled to be a part of the invasion!

South East Dance welcomed a dynamic team of Dance and Performing Arts students from Varndean, Blatchington Mill and BHASVIC.

I found it useful to define my dance pathway and really enjoyed looking at the dance spaces,” said student Katie Dale-Everett.

Their action packed day included: assessing the benefits of The Dance Space, a project aiming to provide our region with a flagship arts venue; a workshop to re-brand South East Dance, during which the students came up with ideas for a new company name and logo designs and a debate on current issues in dance.

Student, Georgia Rogers commented: “I enjoyed getting involved in designing and thinking about the new studio.”

South East Dance staff were inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of all the young participants. Rowena Price, who organised the event at South East Dance, said: "It was fantastic to see how well the young people engaged in the workshops, I'm really pleased with how the day went."

Kyla Lucking, Head of Community and Learning said: "It’s vital for us that we understand how young people experience our work so that we can continue to produce inclusive, accessible dance for all.

We’re already looking forward to 11 Million Takeover Day 2009 and are in talks with other dance organisations in the region to spread this great event."

'I really enjoyed the dance debate workshop because it was really good to put forward all our queries and thoughts about the arts.'
